Trans-Atlantic westbound volumes were up 7 percent in the first quarter, according to PIERS. Volumes were up 5 percent in January, 21 percent in February and were down 1 percent in March versus the prior-year months. Rates from Europe to the U.S. are up over the past year. East Coast ports saw an 8 percent increase in European imports, while Gulf Coast ports saw a 17 percent increase and West Coast ports, which in the first quarter were still in the midst of a labor dispute, saw volumes drop 4 percent, according to PIERS.
