Port of Prince Rupert diverts U.S. IPI cargo to Seattle

We would like to provide you with an update on the current state of operations at the Port of Prince Rupert.

Following the operational challenges caused by the winter conditions and a continuous high amount of volumes arriving into Prince Rupert over the course of the last two months, congestion has increased and put a strain on the terminal’s capacity. Currently, average dwell times are expected to be seven to eight days for the Maersk Semakau and Northern Magnitude, before improving significantly through March as the volumes level off. It is due to this impact that Maersk plans to divert some U.S. IPI cargo to Seattle to alleviate the stress on Prince Rupert. The decision to divert cargo to Seattle will ensure normalized operations at the Port of Prince Rupert within six weeks. By calling Seattle, we allow Prince Rupert to stay fluid while reducing the potential impact another rail car shortage or cold weather spell may have on terminal operations. Similar actions are being taken by terminal partners at the Port of Prince Rupert to support decongestion efforts.
