ELD Mandate Moving Forward
According to Hailey Desormeaux of American Shipper, “The U.S. House of Representatives rejected an effort to delay the implementation of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) electronic logging device (ELD) mandate after a bill was introduce in July to push back its implementation by two years to December 2019.”
Basically, the mandate requires truck driver to ditch the paper and use an electronic logging device. In early 2017, The Journal of Commerce predicted the switch would cause push back from carriers and a reduction in capacity. The fact that a bill was introduced in July to push back the mandate proves that many carriers can see this regulation hurtful to their business. Unfortunately, the House is moving forward and the ELD Extension Act of 2017 (H.R. 3282) is scheduled to take effect December 18, 2017. It will require electronic logging devices to be installed on all interstate commercial vehicles model year 2000 and newer.
