Major lines have recently sent notices to clients to announce their rescheduling and postponement of many sailings that call the world’s busiest port, the Port of Shanghai

The congestion has caused delays at the Yangshan Port Shengdong container terminal and Guandong container terminal.   In fact, according to Splash24/7 on April 17, 2017, “The congestion of Shanghai’s Yangshan port continues and port operators have rescheduled more port calls to other port terminals in Shanghai in order to ease pressure at the worlds largest boxport.”

Why the Congestion?

In addition to bad weather conditions, rampant overbooking by carriers in the wake of newly restructured vessel sharing alliances is at the root of the congestion and delays.  Bad weather and shrinking capacity following a recent realignment of shipping alliances have created a perfect storm of port congestion that has caused a virtual gridlock in traffic at the port of Yangshan in China.

What should we do?

Scarbrough and our local Shanghai partners suggest to load earlier and in-gate to port in time to avoid any delay.  If not, the shipper may incur an additional charge from around CNY500. If your shipments are at all effected by the congestion, Scarbrough will ensure to keep you updated. For any questions, please email info@scarbrough-intl.com.
