Truckers in India Strike against Tolls

updated: October 5, 2015

The truckers enter their fifth day and the deadlock continues.  According to ndtv.com, “according to reports from states, movement of goods has been impacted in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, among other places. Supply of essential goods such as milk, vegetables and medicines has been kept out of the purview of the indefinite strike called by AIMTC.”

The strike began on October 1, 2015 in New Delhi and continues today. According to the Indian Express, the “Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari offered electronic-toll system pan-India by December to address their concerns, but made it clear that scrapping of toll system was not possible.”

The truckers do not agree with the Government’s new toll collection system, and the Government refuses to budge regardless of how much money it is losing per day compared to the truckers these 2 days.  (Government’s Rs 20,000 crore vs. Truckers’ Rs 3,000 crore)

“We will continue our strike till the government comes out with some practical solution to our problem. We are not against paying toll but we are demanding it in an annualised form. “The electronic-toll collection system as promised by the government is not practical,” All India Motor Transport Congress President Bhim Wadhwa told PTI.” [Oneindia.com]

The strike will likely cause problems at the border for both air and ocean freight, but at this moment it is not clear as to what the impact will be.
