The ‘Supply Chain Events’ Year in Review

The number of supply chain alerts and notifications reported by the EventWatch team was relatively flat in 2014 compared to 2013 and has averaged just under one a day over the two-year period. In 2014, 339 supply chain event alerts and notifications were published. This compares to 353 in 2013, a 4% decrease.

The top 5 most impactful supply chains events of 2014

  • Typhoon Halong in western Japan with a estimated impact of more than $10,000M+
  • Severe flooding in Long Island, New York, with a revenue impact of more than $4,000M+
  • Typhoon Rammasun in China and Vietnam, which caused a revenue impact exceeding $1,500M+
  • Taiwan gas explosions, $900M+ impact
  • Intel hazardous chemical spill in Arizona, which also had a revenue impact that topped $900M+

“This was a good year for supply chain events as there were no severe disruptions on the scale of the 2011 Thailand floods, the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami or 2012’s Hurricane Sandy,” said Shazaib Khan, Resilinc EventWatch program manager.

 

Report highlights

• For two year in a row (2013-2014), factory fires/explosions were the most common supply chain event.

• The top 3 industries for supply chain were automotive, high-tech and life sciences.

• The combined number of events rated severe and high in potential disruption impact was up 12 percent in 2014 compared to 2013.
